Third-party negotiations working toward a final agreement on a American ceasefire proposal to end the war in Gaza have started in the mediation venue of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Palestinian and Egyptian officials have indicated that the sessions are concentrating on "establishing the groundwork" for a potential swap that would see the freeing of all Israeli hostages in return for a quantity of detained Palestinians.
Hamas has said it consents to the peace plan proposals partially, but has omitted reference to several crucial requirements - such as its military demobilization and political participation in Gaza.
The Israeli leader said on recently that he hoped to announce the freeing of detained individuals "soon"
Historical Framework
The negotiations, which will involve regional and international officials facilitating discussions with teams from both the two sides in isolation, occur on the approach of the second anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on the initial attack date, in which about 1,200 people were lost their lives and 251 others were captured.
The armed forces began military actions in Gaza in response. Following the initial attack, 67,160 have been fatally injured by armed interventions in Gaza, based on data from the territory's local health authorities.
Initiative Components
The comprehensive proposal, which has been endorsed by the Trump administration and Israeli officials, proposes an immediate end to combat and the liberation of 48 hostages, only a portion are thought to be alive, in compensation of numerous of Palestinian prisoners.
The framework requires that once all involved accept the initiative "complete assistance will be promptly delivered into the Palestinian territory"
It also specifies that Hamas would have no participation in administering the territory, and it allows for an eventual Palestinian state.
Current Situation
On Friday, officials replied to the proposal in a declaration, in which the group agreed "to free all Israeli prisoners, both alive and killed, according to the swap arrangement outlined in President Trump's proposal" - if the proper conditions for the transfers are met.
It omitted reference to or endorse the comprehensive proposal but said it "restates its approval to transfer the governance of the Palestinian territory to a Palestinian body of professionals, founded on local agreement and regional endorsement"
The statement failed to address of one of the crucial requirements of the initiative – that Hamas agree to its military demobilization and to ceasing political participation in the leadership of Gaza.
International Response
Gaza inhabitants portrayed the organization's answer to the peace plan as unexpected, after days of signals that the group was preparing to reject or at least heavily condition its endorsement of the US framework.
Instead, Hamas refrained from including its established limits in the official statement, a move many view as a sign of external pressure.
International and regional representatives have welcomed the initiative. The local administration, which controls areas of the disputed regions, has described the Trump administration actions as "sincere and determined"
The Persian nation - which has been one of the group's primary supporters for decades - has also recently indicated its support for Trump's Gaza peace plan.
