FAI Approves Motion Calling for Uefa Ban on Israeli Teams

The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to submit a formal motion to Uefa, calling for the banning of Israel from continental club and international tournaments.

Basis of the Recommended Suspension

The resolution, that had been put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, highlighted claimed breaches by the Israel Football Association of a couple of key European football regulations.

  • Failure to apply and uphold an effective policy against racism.
  • Organisation of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories lacking the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.

Ballot Results and Next Steps

As stated in an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was supported by 74 votes, with 7 against and two abstentions.

They plans to officially present this motion to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from Uefa competitions.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the Football Association of Ireland, an standard motion was put to members. It was approved by a large margin.

Earlier Uefa Deliberations

Uefa had previously put on hold plans to exclude Israel at the close of last month, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the area.

Although Uefa never publicly stated considering an special session on the matter, plans were believed to be quite advanced.

International Backdrop

The FAI resolution follows comparable calls in September from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for banning Israel from international competition.

These appeals were issued after UN specialists asked world and European football bodies to suspend Israel, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.

Israel has rejected these claims and labeled the findings as scandalous.

Potential Consequences

If Uefa decide to suspend Israel, it would probably create tension with the United States government – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.

Even though the European body has the power to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to stop them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under Fifa.
